Overview
Researchers from the University of California, Santa Cruz and the University of California, Santa Barbara published a study in the journal Science analyzing over 400 gasoline and electric vehicle models. The research indicates that replacing gasoline vehicles with electric vehicles (EVs) can significantly reduce total CO2 emissions.
According to the study, the carbon debt incurred during the manufacturing of an EV is typically offset by its operational efficiency after approximately three years of use. In 92 percent of the scenarios examined, early replacement of a gasoline car with an EV resulted in lower overall emissions. Specifically, retiring a gasoline car after one year and substituting it with an EV can cut total CO2 emissions by up to 58 percent over a 16-year lifespan, and by 44 percent if the swap occurs after two years.
While the study suggests that expanding scrappage and replacement programs to include younger gasoline cars could be beneficial, the authors note that a blanket recommendation to discard every gasoline vehicle is not warranted, particularly for low-mileage vehicles, plug-in hybrids, or in regions with electricity mixes heavily reliant on coal.
