Climate resilience planning in Greece
Overview
Following devastating floods in Thessaly caused by Mediterranean cyclones ‘Daniel’ and ‘Elias’—which resulted in economic costs exceeding €5 billion—academic researchers proposed a new urban planning framework to build regional resilience against extreme weather.
Building on these needs for climate adaptation, the Green Fund has since approved funding for ‘Urban Resilience Plans’ across 23 Greek municipalities. This initiative, part of the ‘Environmental Balance Actions’ program, allocates over €1.1 million to help local communities forecast and adapt to natural and economic challenges. Specific funding has been directed to municipalities in the Preveza region and the Cyclades islands to identify vulnerabilities and design technical projects for environmental protection.
