Climbing fatality in the Julian Alps
Overview
A German climber died on Sunday, October 18, following a fall of over 50 meters on the north face of Grande Nabois in the Julian Alps. The accident occurred during the afternoon while the woman was traversing the ‘Cengia dei Camosci’ technical route.
Reports indicate the climber was accompanied by an Austrian companion. Although both were described as experienced and well-prepared, they were not roped together at the time of the incident. Preliminary findings suggest a handhold unexpectedly gave way, causing the climber to lose her grip and fall.
Emergency response efforts involved the Friuli Venezia Giulia Alpine and Speleological Rescue, the Guardia di Finanza Alpine Rescue, and regional air rescue teams. Following authorization from a magistrate, an air rescue crew recovered the body, concluding operations in the late afternoon.
