Clinical trials for pediatric and adolescent obesity

Overview

Clinical trials for obesity treatments targeting children and adolescents have reported positive results for new medications.

In September 2026, Novo Nordisk announced that its phase 3 STEP Young trial for semaglutide met its primary endpoint. In the study, 40.4% of children aged 6 to under 12 receiving once-weekly semaglutide were no longer classified as having obesity after 68 weeks, compared to none in the placebo group. The company reported that safety and tolerability were consistent with previous trials.

By October 2026, results from a Phase 1b trial for Ecknoglutide were presented at the European Association for the Study of Diabetes. The study, involving 48 Chinese adolescents aged 12 to 17, showed that participants receiving various doses achieved a BMI reduction of 11.2% to 12.6% over 20 weeks. The drug, a cAMP-biased GLP-1 receptor agonist, also showed improvements in metabolic indicators and waist circumference with a favorable safety profile.
