Initially, Leko drew criticism from analyst Franky Van der Elst for publicly downplaying player Mamadou Diakhon’s performance following a victory. Leko also defended his preference for conducting media interviews in English rather than Dutch to avoid potential miscommunications.

Following a 2-1 defeat to KAA Gent, internal dissatisfaction grew. Leko criticized the team’s tactical approach, specifically targeting a lack of intensity and an over-reliance on slow possession. He stated, “With tiki-taka, you do not win matches in the Belgian championship,” emphasizing the need for more direct play and counter-attacking energy. Striker Nicolo Tresoldi also offered self-criticism, admitting he was “not good enough” during the match.

In a subsequent 1-0 victory against Lommel SK, the team’s offensive efficiency remained a concern after a goal by Eyoma was disallowed by VAR. Amidst the departures of Christos Tzolis and the suspension of Carlos Forbs, Leko addressed the increased pressure on young winger Mamadou Diakhon. Leko defended the player but noted that the responsibility of starting for a major club can make the jersey feel like it “weighs 100 kilos.” Leko also revealed he had previously advised Diakhon to “shut up and work” to prioritize development over excuses.

In a narrow 1-0 victory against Lommel SK, Leko continued to defend Diakhon, noting the pressure on the winger to fill the void left by Tzolis. While the win provides momentum ahead of their Champions League campaign, analysts suggest the squad may be temporarily weakened due to recent departures.
