Coastal restoration and sargassum management in Playa del C

Coastal restoration efforts are underway in Playa del Carmen to address erosion and shoreline retreat. Mexico’s Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat) has granted conditional authorization for the ‘Restitución de la Playa Bahía del Carmen’ project, which involves constructing breakwaters and performing artificial sand replenishment to combat a shoreline retreat of over 30 meters since 2004.

To manage sargassum impacts, local authorities are working to return sand recovered from sargassum collected during 2025 and 2026 to coastal dunes in areas such as El Recodo, Calle 10, and Playacar. This project, which is currently awaiting Semarnat approval, utilizes automated engineering processes to separate sand from the seaweed to enhance beach attractiveness for the high season.

In recent developments, Mayor Estefanía Mercado reported ongoing coordination with the Mexican Navy (Semar), which deploys over 580 personnel daily for beach cleaning and protection. An investment exceeding 2 billion pesos is being directed toward sargassum containment strategies across the region.

While these restoration and management projects proceed, activists continue to raise concerns regarding the environmental and cultural impacts of development in the Punta Venado area, calling for investigations into potential archaeological vestiges and protected species.
