Cocaine seizures on European motorways
Overview
Authorities in Romania and France have intercepted significant quantities of cocaine during motorway operations.
In Romania, DIICOT prosecutors ordered the detention of a 35-year-old man suspected of coordinating regional distribution networks. He was intercepted on the A1 motorway with approximately 1 kilogram of cocaine hidden in a specially constructed secret compartment within a vehicle's central console.
In France, a court in Vienne sentenced a Macedonian truck driver to four years in prison following the seizure of over 68 kg of cocaine on the A7 motorway. Customs agents intercepted the vehicle at a rest area in Auberives-sur-Varèze; the shipment, valued at approximately 1.7 million euros, was traveling from Spain to Belgium. The driver, a repeat offender, claimed he believed he was transporting cannabis to cover medical expenses.
