Cocaine theft from Fiji High Court

Overview

Authorities in Fiji are investigating the theft of cocaine from the Suva High Court exhibit room. Initial reports indicated that approximately 40 kilograms of cocaine, valued at roughly 30 million Fijian dollars, were stolen from a vault. Forensic testing revealed that several packages were missing, while the remaining packages had been tampered with and replaced with flour.

As the investigation progressed, the scale of the theft was updated to include 52.4 kilograms of cocaine. The missing narcotics were linked to two separate criminal cases: one involving Fiji-Canadian national Joshua Aziz Rahman and another involving former Australian horse trainer John Nikolic.

Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu identified six persons of interest within the judiciary system, noting that one individual has fled the country. The investigation has uncovered significant security failures at the courthouse, such as non-operational CCTV and biometric access equipment. In response, Justice Minister Siromi Turaga has initiated a review of storage and access controls, while police have begun centralizing seized drugs in more secure facilities in Nadi, Lautoka, and Totogo.
