Coimbra SMTUC urban transport restructuring
Overview
Following a survey by the Union of Parishes of Eiras and São Paulo de Frades that highlighted significant dissatisfaction with Coimbra’s municipal urban transport services (SMTUC), a restructuring proposal has been introduced.
The initial survey of 172 participants revealed that 96% experienced delays, with 71% reporting they occur frequently. Residents cited low service frequency, poor punctuality, and inadequate route coverage as primary issues, specifically noting problems with lines 25, 36, and 30.
In response to service challenges, a study by OPT proposes a major overhaul of the SMTUC network. The plan suggests reducing the number of bus lines from 112 to 52 to eliminate redundancies and create a simpler system. The restructuring aims to increase frequency and improve integration with intercity transport and ‘metrobus’ through shorter line extensions and new transfer interfaces. While the number of lines would decrease, the proposal mandates that overall network connectivity must not be reduced.
