Colombia earthquake telecommunications disruption
Overview
Following an earthquake in Colombia, widespread connectivity issues have been reported, affecting mobile signals and internet services. These disruptions have impacted users' ability to work, study, and communicate.
In response, Claro Colombia has initiated infrastructure restoration efforts in the departments of Chocó, Caldas, Quindío, Risaralda, and Valle del Cauca. The company reported that approximately 80% of its base stations and nearly 100% of its fiber nodes in these regions are now operational. To assist recovery, Claro deployed 26 power plants to Quibdó, Pereira, and Cali, and provided two million prepaid customers with a free seven-day package of unlimited calls, texts, and 2 GB of data.
Amidst these disruptions, guidance has been issued to users on maintaining device battery life during emergencies, such as activating extreme battery saving modes and disabling non-essential functions like Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and GPS.
