Colombia-FARC peace agreement legacy
Overview
Ten years after the 2016 peace agreement between the Colombian government and the FARC, political figures and negotiators have offered differing assessments of the pact’s legacy.
Critics from the Centro Democrático party, including Senator Hernán Cadavid, have condemned the implementation process. Cadavid argued that the ‘No’ vote in the original plebiscite was ignored, resulting in “absolute impunity” for the guerrilla group and a failure to prioritize victims. Former President Álvaro Uribe Vélez also criticized the Special Jurisdiction for Peace (JEP), linking the peace process to a massive increase in cocaine production and drug trafficking.
In contrast, former chief negotiator Humberto de la Calle characterized the demobilization of 13,000 combatants as an “unprecedented achievement.” While acknowledging that implementation has fallen short of expectations, De la Calle argued that the agreement prevented even greater territorial instability and complex violence that would have occurred had the FARC remained active.
