Colombia Orinoco crocodile emergency order

Entities: PROCAIMÁN program · Orinoco crocodile (Crocodylus intermedius) · National University of Colombia · Tribunal Superior de Villavicencio · Ministry of Environment (Colombia)

Overview

In July 2026 a Colombian court ordered immediate care for the critically endangered Orinoco crocodile, directing authorities to act without delay. By early August the same court issued a detailed emergency contingency plan, giving the National University of Colombia 48 hours to begin feeding about 200 captive crocodiles that had been unfed since late 2025. The ruling also specified institutional responsibilities, a feeding schedule, veterinary care and temporary measures while funding disputes between the Ministry of Environment, regional officials and conservation programs are resolved, aiming to prevent further deaths and cannibalism among the species.
