Colombia presidential inauguration preparations
Overview
On August 5, Colombia’s defense minister Pedro Sánchez Suárez inspected security arrangements in Cali ahead of the August 7 presidential inauguration. He oversaw the deployment of more than 11,000 soldiers and police officers equipped with drones, anti‑drone systems and armored vehicles, set up checkpoints on main routes, installed a special security device at Palmira International Airport, and announced a reward of up to 500 million Colombian pesos for information that could prevent attacks.
After the inauguration, focus shifted to the political transition. Experts warned that the new administration should ensure a smooth hand‑over that maintains continuity of essential public services—education, health and pensions—treating them as pillars of the social contract. They recommended avoiding polarising rhetoric and abrupt policy shifts, and urged clear, responsible communication to preserve institutional stability and democratic legitimacy.
