Colombian National Police anti-riot unit restructuring
Overview
The Colombian National Police has restructured its public order response by dissolving the Dialogue and Order Maintenance Unit (UNDMO) and establishing the National Anti-Riot Unit (UNADI). Through Resolution 03226, the institution has also reinstated the Mobile Anti-Riot Squads (ESMAD), a designation previously replaced in 2022.
The new UNADI structure comprises a sub-command, an operational monitoring group, eight regional anti-riot units, and 30 mobile squads. This reorganization follows tensions in Bogotá, where anti-riot units were deployed near the National Museum during protests regarding the removal of historical and social pieces from museum collections.
Within the reinstated ESMAD operational group, female patrol officers including Leidy Varón, Valentina González, and Nayibe Ortiz are currently serving. These officers have between six and nine years of experience in the National Police and have been integrated into the ESMAD unit for the past three years.
