Colombo Marathon international recognition and growth

Overview

The Colombo Marathon has achieved international competitive status after being validated by World Athletics. Registered on the World Athletics Global Calendar as a World Rankings Competition, the event took place on September 13, 2026, at Galle Face Green.

The 2026 edition hosted over 5,000 participants, including 130 international competitors from 25 countries. Organized by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports alongside the Department of Sports Development, the event featured a total prize pool exceeding Rs. 12.83 million.

In the men’s 42km full marathon, Uganda’s Julius Ugandan Ochieng secured first place with a time of 2:18:54, ahead of Kenya’s Geoffrey Birgen and Ethiopia’s Negasi Tuji Korme. The women’s 42km full marathon was won by Ethiopia’s Aynalem Kasahun Teferi in 2:54:09, followed by Gete Guta Galato and Genzeb Shumi Regasa.

In the 21km half marathon, Kenya’s Edwin Yebei Kiptoo won the men’s category, while Sri Lanka’s Methmi Rosata took first in the women’s category. Sri Lankan runners achieved a podium sweep in both the men’s and women’s 10km races.
