Comiso Airport in Sicily is undergoing significant operational and infrastructural expansions. In early September 2026, the airport announced an expansion of its flight routes for the 2026/2027 winter season. Supported by a 3 million euro investment from the Sicilian Region, Aeroitalia secured a contract to provide eight additional weekly flights starting in October, connecting the airport to Malta, Naples, and Venice. A major infrastructure project to improve road connectivity was formalized through a €48.27 million contract funded by the Development and Cohesion Fund (FSC). Awarded to a grouping including Consorzio Stabile Progettisti Costruttori and Consorzio Stabile Steelconcrete, the project involves modernizing approximately 6.3 kilometers of roads to link the SS 115 highway to the SP 4 roundabout. This will strengthen the connection between the airport and the SS 514 Ragusa-Catania axis, with construction expected to last approximately 900 days. Further expansion efforts are targeting the airport’s cargo sector to support economic growth and agricultural exports in southwestern Sicily. A development project for the cargo area is expected to reach a total investment of €62 million, combining €46 million from the FSC with co-participation from the airport management company, Sac. Technical plans include expanding the terminal, lengthening and improving the runway, and creating a logistics area. To facilitate the project, officials expect to resolve land cadastral issues regarding regional property within the airport perimeter by the first week of October, allowing for the transfer of lands to the national state property. However, the airport faces criticism regarding its economic model. Claudio Melchiorre, president of the Mec (Movimento Elettori e Consumatori), has labeled service costs as “unsustainable” for airlines and passengers.
