Commercial flight near‑miss incidents

In late July 2026 a Delta Air Lines flight diverted to Chattanooga due to weather later attempted a landing at Atlanta’s Hartsfield‑Jackson airport. While the crew performed a go‑around, another Delta flight was taking off on a parallel runway. Air‑traffic control directed both aircraft onto intersecting paths, and TCAS alerts prompted the pilots to separate. The closest approach was about 1,800 feet horizontally and 600 feet vertically. The FAA opened an investigation.

A week later, on 4 August 2026, an All Nippon Airways Boeing 767 approaching Tokyo’s Haneda Airport came within roughly 20 metres vertically of a Cessna 525C flight‑inspection aircraft. TCAS issued an alert, the ANA crew aborted the landing, climbed, and later completed a safe landing. No injuries were reported. Japan’s civil aviation authorities launched an investigation.

Both events involved commercial aircraft narrowly avoiding collision at major airports, triggered TCAS warnings, and resulted in regulatory inquiries, underscoring ongoing scrutiny of air‑traffic safety procedures.
