Contecon Manzanillo port capacity expansion
Overview
Contecon Manzanillo (CMSA), a subsidiary of International Container Terminal Services, Inc. (ICTSI), has received regulatory approval to handle ultra-large container vessels at the Port of Manzanillo in Mexico. The authorization enables the terminal to accommodate ships up to 400 meters in length with drafts of up to 15.5 meters, including vessels with capacities of up to 24,000 TEUs.
This development is part of an ongoing expansion program. Following the completion of Phase 3A in 2025, which brought annual capacity to approximately 1.8 million TEUs, the company is progressing with Phase 3B. This phase involves adding 227 meters of quay and acquiring new cranes to eventually reach an annual capacity of 2 million TEUs and an operational draft of 17 meters. To support these deeper-draft vessels, the Administración del Sistema Portuario Nacional Manzanillo (ASIPONA Manzanillo) is conducting dredging and basin-conditioning works.
