Contecon Manzanillo port capacity expansion

Overview

Contecon Manzanillo (CMSA), a subsidiary of International Container Terminal Services, Inc. (ICTSI), has received regulatory approval to handle ultra-large container vessels at the Port of Manzanillo in Mexico. The authorization, granted on August 31, enables the terminal to accommodate ships up to 400 meters in length with drafts of up to 15.5 meters, including vessels with capacities of up to 24,000 TEUs.

This development is part of an ongoing expansion program. Following the completion of Phase 3A in 2025, which brought annual capacity to approximately 1.8 million TEUs, the company is progressing with Phase 3B. To support deeper-draft vessels, the Administración del Sistema Portuario Nacional Manzanillo (ASIPONA Manzanillo) is conducting dredging and basin-conditioning works to help reach a target operational draft of 17 meters.

As part of the third and fourth expansion phases, CMSA has invested over 9 billion pesos to acquire new infrastructure, including two new Ship-to-Shore (STS) cranes. This equipment is designed to service Ultra Large Container Vessels (ULCV) up to 400 meters in length and 61 meters in beam. With these additions, the terminal now operates 14 dock cranes, aiming to eventually reach an annual capacity of 2 million TEUs and strengthen its position as a major logistics node in Mexico.
