Overview

Romanian political figures have faced backlash following controversial remarks regarding the national identity and citizenship of political opponents.

In late August, MP Adrian Câciu faced a discrimination complaint filed with the National Council for Combating Discrimination after making chauvinistic comments toward Gábor Hajdu, chair of the Foreign Affairs Committee. Câciu reportedly stated that Hajdu did not understand what it meant to be Romanian and should not have the right to speak.

In early September, PSD deputy Mihai Fifor drew condemnation from Holocaust research institutions after questioning the Romanian identity of Timișoara Mayor Dominic Fritz. Fifor suggested that “simple citizenship does not make you Romanian,” targeting Fritz’s German origins. The Elie Wiesel National Institute for Holocaust Studies and the Association for the Prevention and Combatting of Antisemitism and Legionarism both condemned the rhetoric, with the latter describing the comments as “racist, xenophobic, and nationalist-extremist.”
