Cooper Flagg NBA career and injury status

Overview

Dallas Mavericks star Cooper Flagg has transitioned from offseason preparation to being recognized as a potential cornerstone for the franchise. Following an impressive debut season where he averaged 21.0 points, 6.7 rebounds, and 4.5 assists to become the 2025–2026 Rookie of the Year, Flagg has entered his second NBA season.

During the 2026 Mavericks media day, Flagg revealed a growth spurt, stating he has grown from 6-foot-9 to 6-foot-10. During a preseason event in China, he jokingly claimed to have grown another quarter of an inch, reaching approximately 6-foot-10.5 without shoes. Flagg also unveiled a new signature logo inspired by the Eastern White Pine, the official state tree of Maine, which will be featured on upcoming New Balance merchandise.

As the season began, Flagg drew comparisons to league legends. Kyrie Irving noted similarities to the early career of Kevin Durant, highlighting Flagg’s competitive nature, while former All-Star Tim Hardaway expressed skepticism regarding comparisons to Larry Bird due to Bird’s historic shooting ability.

However, Flagg’s early progress faced a setback. Following a victory over the Indiana Pacers where he landed hard on his left shoulder, Flagg has been ruled out for the Mavericks’ home opener against the San Antonio Spurs due to a mild left shoulder sprain. He is scheduled to be reevaluated next week. His absence, alongside Kyrie Irving’s sidelined status for knee injury management, leaves the Mavericks without their two primary stars.
