Copper cable theft from Italian railways

Overview

Authorities in Italy have conducted several operations to combat the theft of copper cables from the national railway network.

In San Felice a Cancello, Carabinieri arrested a 38-year-old man caught stealing approximately 4 kilograms of copper cables near the Cancello-Benevento railway section. The suspect was placed under house arrest following the seizure of cutting tools.

In the San Martino in Campo area of Perugia, railway police (Polfer) used a drone provided by Ferrovie dello Stato to monitor difficult terrain. Officers intercepted a group attempting to remove copper from the tracks; the suspects fled in vehicles but were apprehended after a pursuit. Seven individuals, including one minor, were arrested. The minor was transferred to a juvenile detention center in Florence.

On October 4, a theft occurred near Ceccano on a high-speed railway line. Unknown individuals removed approximately 100 meters of copper cable near a communication point in via Badia around 3:00 AM. The theft interrupted the electrical power supply, triggering an alarm. While Carabinieri from Frosinone and Castro dei Volsci arrived on the scene, no suspects were found. Railway technicians worked to restore power, and investigators are currently reviewing surveillance footage to identify those responsible.
