Copper exploration in Mendoza, Argentina

Overview

In late September 2026, BHP and its partners initiated significant copper exploration activities in the Mendoza province of Argentina.

Initially, the Board of Impulsa Mendoza approved a public tender awarding Cerro Quebrado, a BHP subsidiary, an exploration contract with an option to purchase for the El Seguro copper project. This project encompasses the El Yeso, Fausto, and Gitana properties in southern Mendoza as part of the Malargüe Western Mining District I.

Following this, BHP Metals Exploration and Kobrea Exploration announced a US$4 million investment for the 2026-2027 exploration season within the Western Malargüe Copper Projects. This funding targets the El Destino prospect, a 9,487-hectare site containing a copper-gold-molybdenum porphyry system. Planned activities include diamond drilling, geological mapping, and rock chip sampling. This initiative is part of a broader cooperation agreement where BHP funds exploration across seven of Kobrea’s regional projects located within the Neogene Porphyry Belt.
