Corruption investigations in Lichinga, Mozambique

In Lichinga, Niassa province, authorities have initiated investigations into various instances of corruption and financial mismanagement.

Simão Capinga, director of Eduardo Chivambo Mondlane Secondary School, was detained on suspicion of embezzlement, abuse of office, and document falsification. The Niassa Provincial Anti-Corruption Office is investigating irregularities involving school revenues exceeding 2.3 million meticais, during which officials seized 91,170 meticais from the suspect.

Separately, the Lichinga City Judicial Court has twice postponed the sentencing of Mayor Luís Jumo and Armindo Omar, head of the Municipal Council’s Procurement Management and Execution Unit. The Public Ministry alleges the officials engaged in corruption and abuse of office, specifically regarding the awarding of a 4 million metical contract to Yao-Informática, a company that allegedly lacked necessary licenses and operated from premises leased from the Mayor’s wife. The case also examines the awarding of a protocol vehicle contract to a general trading company rather than a specialized automotive entity.
