Corruption investigations in Romania

Overview

The Romanian National Anticorruption Directorate (DNA) has conducted several investigations involving high-level officials and regulatory oversight.

In late July 2026, the DNA detained Ana-Maria Badea, the adjunct director of the Directorate General for Gambling Authorization, on bribery charges. Prosecutors alleged she received approximately €2,500 from gambling industry representatives to expedite official requests. Two inspectors from the National Office for Gambling were also placed under judicial control for allegedly accepting payments to avoid sanctions.

By late August 2026, investigations expanded to the central government. The DNA launched a criminal probe into Cristina Trăilă, the Deputy Secretary General of the Government, for complicity in influence peddling. The investigation alleges that Trăilă assisted in efforts to influence the president of the Vaslui Sanitary-Veterinary and Food Safety Directorate to secure a €3 million compensation file and reduced inspections for businessman Fănel Bogos.

Following the investigation, Trăilă resigned from her position. Prosecutors allege that in November 2025, Trăilă supported efforts by Mihai Barbu, a former PNL treasurer, to influence the National Sanitary Veterinary and Food Safety Authority (ANSVSA) to replace the director of the Vaslui DSVSA with an individual approved by Bogos. While Bogos faces charges including “continuous instigation to blackmail and continuous purchase of influence,” Trăilă has denied all allegations, characterizing the investigation as an “artificial” media scandal intended to damage the image of the Government and the PNL party.
