Corruption trial of former minister Uche Nnaji

Overview

Former Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Uche Nnaji, is facing a six-count charge at the Federal High Court in Abuja involving allegations of corruption, fraud, money laundering, and providing false information.

During the trial, investigators from the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) testified that both the University of Nigeria (UNN) and the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) disowned certificates presented by Nnaji.

Specifically, the NYSC informed the court that a discharge certificate purportedly issued in 1985 was not authentic. An NYSC official noted several discrepancies, including a numbering format not introduced until 1990, a four-digit call-up number instead of the five-digit format used in 1985, and a listed service period of 13 months rather than the standard 12. Nnaji is also the Peoples Democratic Party candidate for the upcoming Enugu State governorship election.
