COSPAR 2026 conference updates

The 46th scientific assembly of the Committee on Space Research (COSPAR) convened in Florence, Italy, from 1‑9 August 2026, drawing over 3,000 specialists from roughly 80 countries. Early sessions highlighted challenges of the new space race, including protecting ground‑based astronomy from megaconstellation interference and assessing the environmental impact of satellite re‑entries. Participants also presented concepts for next‑generation observatories such as NASA’s Habitable Worlds Observatory and showcased advances in contamination sensors and AI‑driven gravitational‑wave processing.

Mid‑conference sessions on 6‑7 August expanded the focus to lunar resource mapping and human‑spaceflight analog research. The Italian Space Agency introduced the ICE BLUE project, using submarine crews and Arctic expeditions as terrestrial analogs to monitor physiological stress markers for future Moon and Mars missions. Researchers from the University of Münster unveiled GIS‑based models that integrate thermal, illumination and rock‑composition satellite data to identify stable water‑ice deposits and map geological sequences for prospective lunar landing sites. An exoplanet study reported the first X‑ray detection of magnetic interaction between a young star and a mini‑Neptune‑type planet, estimating magnetic fields of 40–350 Gauss.

A plenary panel chaired by COSPAR president Pascale Ehrenfreund and Lockheed Martin’s CTO examined AI, autonomous systems and quantum computing in space, emphasizing rigorous software verification and calling for an international regulatory framework to protect the space environment.
