Costa Rica anti-drug operations and DEA cooperation

Overview

Costa Rican authorities have conducted several major anti-drug operations, resulting in the seizure of over four tons of cocaine within a four-day period. These efforts included maritime interceptions in the South Pacific, operations in the Térraba-Sierpe Wetland, and confiscations at the Moín Container Terminal.

Following these seizures, Attorney General Carlo Díaz announced a second phase of joint missions with the U.S. DEA. This phase aims to target “invisible drug traffickers,” specifically individuals such as businesspeople, professionals, or politicians who use their public status to hide links to organized crime.

Díaz also emphasized Costa Rica’s ability to extradite citizens to the United States, noting that six individuals have been extradited with 25 additional processes underway. While addressing DEA concerns regarding domestic political and institutional divisions, Díaz argued that increasing resources for local security forces is preferable to the deployment of U.S. troops on Costa Rican soil.
