Costa Rica recycled plastic housing pilot project
Overview
In Alajuelita, Costa Rica, a pilot housing project has utilized recycled plastic to construct a home for Cindy Mora, a single mother who spent nine years saving to purchase land.
The construction employed approximately 7 to 7.5 tons of plastic waste, including bottles and packaging, to create 850 modular interlocking blocks known as ‘Bliqueplas’ or ‘Bloqueplas’. These blocks were manufactured by the Costa Rican company Ekojunto using waste provided by Procter & Gamble.
The initiative was coordinated by Urrarium (or Urbarium) and supported by Habitat for Humanity Costa Rica, which selected the recipient based on socio-economic criteria. Other contributors included Ekojunto, providing over 800 hours of volunteer labor. While the walls consist of recycled plastic modules, the structure incorporates conventional materials for the foundation, roof, plumbing, and electrical systems to ensure safety. The project serves as an experimental model for sustainable and affordable housing solutions.
