Costco delivery service expansion in the US
Overview
Costco has been expanding its digital and delivery services in the United States through various partnerships.
Initially, the company enhanced its online offerings by allowing members to order custom bakery and deli items, such as cakes and party platters, for home delivery via Instacart and FoodStorm technology. This update replaced a manual system that required in-person visits to warehouses for paper orders.
Following this, Costco significantly broadened its delivery reach by making its full warehouse assortment available through Uber Eats across 47 states and nearly 600 markets. This expansion includes integrated membership benefits, such as discounted Uber One subscriptions. While the Uber Eats expansion is substantial, Costco continues to utilize other partners like Instacart and DoorDash to maintain a diversified delivery strategy.
In a major expansion of its partnership with DoorDash, Costco has launched delivery services across every state in the United States. This allows members to order more than 4,000 items, including groceries, electronics, household essentials, and Kirkland Signature products, directly from local warehouse inventory. To use the service, customers must link an active Costco membership, as non-members cannot bypass the annual fee through the platform. To mark this launch, Costco and DoorDash are offering a temporary incentive for members who spend $100 or more.
Despite the expanded availability, certain items remain excluded from delivery services. Specifically, Costco’s signature food court items, such as its popular hot dog combos, are not available through Uber Eats or DoorDash and must be purchased in-person at warehouse locations.
During a recent earnings call, Costco CEO Ron Vachris noted that customers using these delivery services tend to be “significantly younger” than the company’s general membership base. These services are often utilized by members who require only a few items rather than a full warehouse trip.
