COVID-19 infection surge in Iran

Health authorities in Iran have reported a rise in COVID-19 infections, noting that positive cases have surpassed the low-level warning threshold. Data from the week ending August 29 indicated that approximately 8.3% of individuals presenting with respiratory symptoms tested positive, exceeding the 5% threshold established by the surveillance system.

Qobad Moradi, head of the Center for Communicable Disease Management, stated that the current clinical presentation is similar to endemic COVID-19, with symptoms such as cough, fever, and gastrointestinal issues. Officials warned that elderly populations and those with underlying conditions may face more severe symptoms, including shortness of breath.

In response to the active community transmission, the Ministry of Health has issued directives for intensified management of acute respiratory infections. These measures include mandatory mask use in crowded or closed environments, strict hygiene protocols, and increased monitoring of high-traffic locations like schools, prisons, and nursing homes. Authorities also emphasized the need for syndromic surveillance at border points and the use of local media and religious figures to disseminate preventive information.
