Crane migration at Gallocanta Wetland

Overview

The Gallocanta Wetland in Aragon has resumed its seasonal cycle of common crane migration. To facilitate observation, the Government of Aragon has launched the ‘On the Road with the Cranes’ program, offering free guided tours led by environmental educators to explain migratory habits.

While the arrival of birds from northern and eastern Europe is currently gradual, the lagoon serves as a critical international refuge under the Ramsar Convention. Migration activity typically peaks between mid-October and early December, with historical observations recording over 114,000 cranes in a single day. The birds generally arrive from Northern Europe and Scandinavia to winter in the Iberian Peninsula and North Africa, with a secondary population peak occurring in February during their return journey.
