Crete regional development projects

Entities: Margaritis Schoinas · Nikos Papathanasis · Stavros Arnaoutakis · Municipal Water and Sewage Enterprises (DEWA) · Region of Crete

Overview

In late July 2026 the Region of Crete launched a major cultural investment programme, allocating more than €80 million to restore historic sites such as the Neoria in Heraklion, the Holy Metropolitan Church of Saint Mina and the Pantokrator Gate, and to support a digital exhibition on the city’s 4‑millennium history.

The same week the Greek Ministry of Rural Development and Food signed a public‑private partnership with contractor GE K TERNA to build an €87.9 million irrigation system in Lasithi. The scheme includes an 825 000‑cubic‑metre earthen reservoir, a 52‑metre dam, pumping stations and water‑distribution infrastructure that will irrigate roughly 13 500 ha across the Chochlai‑Sitia and Ierapetra areas. The 25‑year concession foresees the first phase operational within 18 months and full completion in 42 months.

On 31 July 2026 the Crete regional governor announced a €4 million co‑financed call for holistic liquid‑waste‑management projects, covering drinking water, sewage, storm water, sludge, reuse and digitalisation under the “Crete 2021‑2027” programme.

Together, these actions showcase a coordinated push by Crete’s authorities to blend heritage preservation, agricultural modernization and environmental infrastructure, aiming to enhance the island’s economy, sustainability and quality of life.
