Crime and child abuse in Edo State

Overview

In Edo State, government officials reported a significant rise in child abuse, noting over 70 cases of defilement recorded between January and July 2026. Eugenia Abdallah, the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, stated that more than 50 per cent of these cases were perpetrated by the victims' fathers, with targets often aged between 2 and 10.

Following these reports, the Edo State Police Command conducted operations resulting in the arrest of several suspects for various offenses. These included the sexual assault of a 12-year-old male apprentice, kidnapping involving a victim lured via TikTok, cultism, and the vandalism of media equipment.
