In Melbourne, law enforcement arrested a 65-year-old man accused of acting as an Islamic State operative and propagandist. Following a years-long investigation, the Australian Federal Police allege the individual, an Australian citizen, distributed approximately 10,000 files via an encrypted messaging app between 2015 and 2020. The material reportedly included videos and images of executions, torture, and other violent extremist content, as well as instructional guides on conducting mass-casualty attacks and methods for evading law enforcement detection. The investigation was reportedly triggered in 2020 when border officials discovered suspicious material on the man’s electronic devices as he prepared to travel to Egypt. Acting Assistant Commissioner Paula Hudson described the individual as a “principal distributor of ISIS propaganda,” noting that the content was specifically designed to radicalize others. The man faces multiple charges, including membership in a terrorist organization and the transmission of violent extremist material. He also faces charges for using a carriage service to cause offense, with a maximum potential penalty of 10 years in prison.
