Crime and violence in West Bengal

Overview

Recent reports from West Bengal highlight instances of mob violence and police encounters. In the Matigara area of north West Bengal, a mob allegedly lynched one youth and critically injured another based on suspicions of cow theft. The incident involved the pursuit of a vehicle and resulted in the vandalism and burning of two cars. Police arrested four individuals following the assault.

In the North 24 Parganas district, a 23-year-old man, identified as Prahlad Das, was killed in a police encounter in Gaighata. Das was the prime suspect in the rape and murder of a 17-year-old student whose body was discovered after she went missing following a musical program. The encounter occurred during a crime scene reconstruction in the early hours of a Tuesday. Authorities stated that Das allegedly snatched a service revolver from an officer and opened fire while attempting to flee, prompting officers to return fire in self-defence. Das was subsequently declared dead at Chandpara Rural Hospital.

In a separate incident in the Samserganj area of Murshidabad, Samiul Sheikh, an accused in the murder of BJP worker Sujit Mondal, was also killed in an encounter. The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) reported that Sheikh was being transported to a crime scene for reconstruction when he allegedly seized a firearm from an officer and opened fire. He later died at Jangipur Sub-Divisional Hospital.

Both incidents have drawn significant attention due to the circumstances of the shootings occurring during crime scene recreations. West Bengal Minister Dilip Ghosh defended the police, stating that officers sometimes must take ‘unpopular steps to maintain the rule of law and public interest.’
