Crime incidents in Istanbul

Overview

Recent criminal activity in Istanbul has involved both archaeological smuggling and large-scale theft.

In the Çatalca district, gendarmerie teams and the Gendarmerie Crime Research Team (JASAT) apprehended an individual, E. H., attempting to sell Byzantine-era artifacts discovered during field plowing. Authorities seized 52 historical pieces, including 48 silver coins, three rings, and one seal, which were transferred to the Museum Directorate.

Separately, an employee at Linavista Sarrafiye near the Grand Bazaar, identified as Emre C., was detained following the theft of approximately 699,366 USD, 430,758 Turkish Lira, and 806 Euros. The suspect reportedly replaced the stolen cash in a steel safe with kitchenware, such as pots and pans, to delay detection. Investigations into the theft revealed a network using fake Instagram accounts and the game ‘Mobile Legends’ to coordinate transfers. An associate, Berkay T., was found in possession of 130,000 USD.
