Criminal activity and arrests in Greece
Overview
Greek authorities have conducted several operations targeting different types of theft. In the Piraeus, Keratsini, and Drapetsona areas, police arrested two men following the theft of at least 150 metal storm drain covers. One suspect, a 38-year-old, was caught on video and claimed to work for the Public Power Corporation (DEI) to justify his actions. A subsequent raid on a scrap metal business in Botanikos led to the seizure of 12 stolen covers and the arrest of a 46-year-old man for the receipt and disposal of stolen goods.
In a separate operation in Glyfada, police dismantled an international criminal organization involved in “criminal tourism.” This group utilized a “flat tire” method to target bank customers making large cash withdrawals. Members would puncture a victim's tire to force them to pull over, using one member to distract the driver while another stole bags of cash from the vehicle. Three individuals were arrested, facing charges including criminal organization, aggravated theft, and forgery.
