Criminal sentencing developments in Argentina

Overview

Legal proceedings regarding serious criminal convictions have continued in Argentina. In one instance, César Roberto Cepeda is appealing a 14-year prison sentence for the sexual abuse of two minors in Lucas González, with his defense challenging the legitimacy of his preventive detention.

Separately, the Supreme Court of Justice of Argentina upheld a 15-year prison sentence against Jorge Daniel Barceló, an officer of the Argentine Naval Prefecture. Barceló was convicted of sexual, labor, and psychological abuse against a subordinate in Misiones between 2020 and 2022. The court dismissed the defense's appeal, following testimony that the victim faced professional sanctions and harassment after rejecting the officer's advances.

In Salta, a federal court has sentenced two pilots to 10 years in prison for smuggling 364 kilograms of cocaine from Bolivia using a small aircraft that crashed in Rosario de la Frontera. Investigators have linked this operation to a branch of the Sinaloa Cartel.

Additionally, the Argentine Federal Chamber of Criminal Cassation has revoked the dismissal of charges in a human trafficking investigation in Corrientes. The case involves a mother accused of selling her 15-year-old daughter to a merchant in Mercedes in exchange for housing and travel funds. The court ruled that police evidence was sufficient to resume the judicial process.
