Criminal trials and legal proceedings in Germany

Overview

Germany is processing several high-profile criminal trials and legal proceedings involving violent crimes and cold cases. Recent developments include the commencement of the ‘Soester Horrorhaus’ trial in Soest, where defendants face charges of rape, coercion, and false imprisonment. Other significant cases include a fatal retaliatory attack trial in Neubrandenburg and a cold case in Ulm involving the rape and murder of a woman, reopened via new DNA evidence.

In Upper Franconia, the legal process has shifted toward a retrial concerning the 2024 disappearance of a 33-year-old woman. While a 75-year-old man was previously convicted of manslaughter, the Federal Court of Justice overturned the verdict, ruling that the original judgment failed to exclude other possibilities regarding the woman's disappearance. The retrial is scheduled to take place between October 12 and January 15.
