Criminal violence in Oaxaca and Veracruz

Overview

A series of violent incidents occurred in Juchitán de Zaragoza, Oaxaca, on October 19, involving shootings that left three people dead and four injured. These attacks included the execution of a mototaxista and a nighttime shooting near a primary school where a two-year-old child was also injured. Authorities recovered AK-47 and 9mm shell casings at the scene.

Following the arrest of Iván Sánchez Santiago, known as “El Cromo,” a leader of the “Los Cromos” faction of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, Prosecutor Bernardo Rodríguez Alamilla reported a power struggle between four criminal groups fighting for regional control. This territorial dispute resulted in six homicides between October 21 and October 26. In response, federal and state forces conducted operations, including the use of a Black Hawk helicopter, leading to the detention of 15 individuals suspected of generating violence in Juchitán and surrounding municipalities.
