The Argentine Federation of the Wood Industry and Related Activities (FAIMA) has warned of a deepening crisis within the country’s forestry small and medium-sized enterprise (SME) sector. The federation attributes the instability to stagnant domestic demand, high interest rates, and a surge in energy and fuel costs, noting that energy tariffs rose by approximately 300% over a six-month period.

This economic pressure has led to significant employment losses. While initial reports indicated a loss of more than 10% of sector jobs over the previous year, subsequent data from FAIMA specified a year-on-year decline in formal jobs of 8.57 percent. These losses are most acute in high-complexity industrial sectors, including prefabricated housing, panel production, and the manufacturing of doors and windows. FAIMA cautioned that the loss of specialized workers threatens the industry’s technical knowledge and long-term competitiveness.
