Croatia funding continues for Bosnian Croats

Overview

In late July 2026 Croatia announced a €10 million programme to support education, culture, health, agriculture and other initiatives for the Croat community in Bosnia and Herzegovina, together with a €1.8 million grant to 125 Croatian diaspora organisations in 29 countries. The plan funded a youth theatre, a digital mammography unit, energy‑stable cold storage and upgrades to the Croatian House in central Bosnia.

Days later Prime Minister Andrej Plenković handed over 276 contracts worth more than €7 million under the same 2026 Support Programme for Bosnian Croats, citing a rise in Croatia’s budget for Croats abroad from €16 million a decade ago to €200 million today, €4 billion in bilateral trade and a new gas‑pipeline partnership affecting the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

On 28 July 2026 the government allocated an additional €7 million to the programme. A €140,742 grant from Vukovar‑Srijem County was awarded to Široki Brijeg for a multifunctional hall at a vocational school, while further contracts covered fire‑brigade equipment and other community facilities, financed partly through EU regional development funds. Officials highlighted simplified procedures for diaspora entrepreneurs and stressed that the combined effort aims to improve living standards, retain the Croat population in BiH and deepen economic cooperation between the two countries.
