Croatia insurance and pension sector trends

Recent data indicates growth and structural shifts within Croatia’s insurance and pension sectors. The Croatian Pension Insurance Institute (HZMO) reported that the number of insured persons reached 1,797,071 by the end of August 2026, marking a 0.91 percent increase compared to the previous year. Employment levels across sectors showed wholesale and retail trade, manufacturing, construction, and hospitality as the largest contributors to these figures.

In the broader financial services market, the Croatian Financial Services Supervisory Agency (HANFA) noted that total insurance premiums reached 1.46 billion euros during the first eight months of the year, a 6.9 percent increase year-on-year. Non-life insurance grew by 7.4 percent, with motor vehicle liability representing 34 percent of that segment.

Additionally, there has been a significant trend regarding mandatory pension funds. Enrollment in Category A funds, which provide higher stock exposure, increased by approximately 184,000 members over a two-year period. This shift is linked to 2024 pension reforms that automatically assign certain members to Category A based on their proximity to retirement.
