Croatia post‑earthquake cultural heritage restoration

After the December 2020 earthquakes that damaged numerous historic sites, Croatian officials have pursued a coordinated program to restore key cultural landmarks. In July 2026, Archbishop Dražen Kutleša met with Minister of Culture and Media Nina Obuljen Koržinek to review progress on the Zagreb Cathedral’s reconstruction, praising governmental support and outlining continued funding for reinforcement and preservation of sacred buildings.

Later that month, the same minister attended the reopening of the Krsto Hegedušić Gallery in Petrinja. The six‑year, €1.9 million project—financed by the Ministry and the EU Solidarity Fund—completed work on one of 26 cultural‑historical sites slated for revival in the town. Officials highlighted the gallery’s role as a “cultural lighthouse” and a symbol of the broader effort to restore modern and contemporary art venues damaged by the quake.
