The 2026 Balkan film and theatre season continued through August with a focus on talent development and regional accessibility. In Croatia, the Ivanovec Film Camp offered free workshops for youth from 10–15 August, while the third Vrboska Film Festival on Hvar featured the “Plava palma” award. The nationwide ‘Ljeto u mreži’ (Summer in the Network) program provided free, Croatian-synchronized screenings across 47 independent cinemas through September 1. Late August saw the opening of the 24th Liburnia Film Festival in Opatija and the Ivo Gregurević Croatian Film Days in Orašje. Other highlights included the Rab Film Festival and the launch of the DocuConnect Balkans program at the Interakcija Festival in Požega. In mid-September, the 19th Four River Film Festival was held in Karlovac through September 19. Organized by the Croatian Film Federation and Kinoklub Karlovac, the festival featured 72 films selected from 1,866 international submissions. The Grand Prix was awarded to the feature film ‘Myosotis’, produced by Zagreb-based Blank filmski inkubator. Category winners included ‘Mačji kašalj’ (best animated film), ‘Zadnji dan škole’ (best documentary), ‘Evanđelje po Noni’ (best feature), and ‘Refleksije’ (free style). Additionally, the fifth Fine Line Film Festival in Belgrade, Serbia, concluded on September 20. In its ‘Beyond Borders’ international selection, the animated film ‘Cosmonauts’ by Leo Černic was named best film. Regional programming also included the 17th ‘Novo kino Osmijeh’ film festival in Croatia, which concluded after four days of screenings and three days of workshops in locations such as Gunja and Drenovci. The event focused on media literacy and practical workshops for students in filming, sound, and editing. Furthermore, the television program ‘Jutro sa Majom’ on Televizija E featured discussions with director Danilo Šerbajija regarding the importance of festivals for showcasing ‘small films’ and the evolution of modern cinematography.
