The 2026 Balkan film and theatre season continued through August with a focus on talent development and regional accessibility. In Croatia, the Ivanovec Film Camp offered free workshops for youth from 10–15 August, while the third Vrboska Film Festival on Hvar featured the “Plava palma” award. The nationwide ‘Ljeto u mreži’ (Summer in the Network) program, organized by Kino mreža, provided free, Croatian-synchronized screenings across 47 independent cinemas through September 1, including family-oriented screenings of ‘Monsters, Inc.’ and ‘Dolphin Boy 2’ in Nova Gradiška. New developments in late August saw the opening of the 24th Liburnia Film Festival in Opatija, which focuses on societal militarization and featured the Croatian premiere of Ive Kraljević’s experimental documentary, ‘Ovu sobu ostavite zakopanu’. Simultaneously, the Ivo Gregurević Croatian Film Days began in Orašje, offering free admission to fifteen recent works, including Branko Schmidt’s ‘Put lubenica’. Other Croatian highlights included the Rab Film Festival, which premiered the documentary ‘Vjesnik – Posljednje izdanje’, and the launch of the DocuConnect Balkans program at the Interakcija Festival in Požega. As the summer season concludes, outdoor cinema events are scheduled in Šenkovac, featuring ‘Inside Out 2’ and ‘Freaky Friday’ on August 29, and in Matulji, where the award-winning film ‘Koke’ will be screened on August 30. Looking toward September, Croatia will host the ‘Rendez-vous au cinéma’ program in Nova Gradiška, showcasing free French films, and the 19th Four River Film Festival in Karlovac, which focuses on young filmmakers and features 72 selected films from an international pool. In Bosnia-Herzegovina, the 32nd Sarajevo Film Festival hosted the regional premiere of ‘Skriveni ljudi’ (Hidden People) and expanded its presence via the Bingo Summer Cinema in Tuzla. In Montenegro, the 39th Montenegro Film Festival in Herceg Novi, the only newly accredited FIAPF festival in Southeast Europe, featured Serbian films competing for the Golden Mimosa award. In Serbia, the Slobodni univerzitet in Niš expressed support for the Niš Film Festival amid local tensions.
