Wildfires in Serbia and Bosnia stabilize after damage stabilize; Romanian fires

As of late August, international firefighting teams continue to battle severe wildfires in Serbia’s Deliblato Sands region. Following the activation of the EU Civil Protection Mechanism, a German module has expanded to 56 personnel and 24 vehicles, including firefighters from North Rhine-Westphalia and Lower Saxony, working alongside Serbian and Romanian forces. While the situation in Deliblatska Peščara has stabilized following recent rainfall, crews remain on-site 24 hours a day to monitor for new hotspots. The effort includes aerial support from a Russian Il-76TD aircraft and various helicopters. By August 31, the wildfire situation in Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina has begun to stabilize, though significant environmental damage has occurred. In Serbia, the fire in the Deliblatska Peščara nature reserve reached a stable state after more than a month of fighting. The blaze affected between 4,000 and 5,500 hectares of forest and vegetation, with visible impacts across more than 10,000 hectares. Experts from Vojvodinašume estimate that restoring the area’s biodiversity will require at least two decades of intensive care. Other Serbian areas, including Stolovi mountain and the Pešterska plateau, remain under monitoring as some fires are not yet fully localized. In Bosnia and Herzegovina, the situation near Trebinje is stable, but an active fire front persists in the village of Grabovica, where helicopters are being deployed. Emergency services continue to monitor critical zones to prevent the reactivation of fires. By early September, the Romanian firefighting mission concluded. A team of 69 Romanian personnel and 15 technical vehicles, deployed via the EU Civil Protection Mechanism, returned home after a two-week mission. The Romanian intervention also included a Black Hawk S-70M rescEU helicopter, which conducted seven water drops using the Bambi Bucket system to assist in hard-to-reach areas. While the Romanian team completed its mission in Serbia, domestic wildfire challenges emerged in Romania. In Bihor County, a large fire has affected approximately 25 hectares of forest near Mizieș. Firefighters are currently working to contain the blaze, though strong and shifting winds are complicating efforts to prevent the fire from reaching residential areas.
