Croatian healthcare system debt crisis

Overview

Croatian hospital and healthcare facilities are facing a combined debt of nearly €800 million, primarily due to unpaid bills for medical materials and pharmaceutical wholesalers. The debt increased by 22% between the end of 2023 and June 2024, rising from €648 million to €763 million.

To address these liabilities, the Croatian government approved an additional €125.7 million from the state budget. This brings the total of recent fiscal interventions to €304.6 million. While the funding is intended to settle overdue obligations and maintain the supply of medicines, officials have not yet provided a long-term solution to the growing debt.
