Cross River State youth empowerment initiatives
Overview
The Cross River State Government has initiated programs to address youth unemployment and promote economic transformation through skill acquisition and entrepreneurship.
Governor Bassey Edet Otu approved N1.499 billion for the Cross River Youth Skill Acquisition and Start-up Empowerment Programme. This initiative is designed to train 2,620 young people in vocational, technical, and digital skills, providing them with various start-up kits ranging from laptops and industrial sewing machines to agricultural tools. The governor described the move as “a deliberate economic transformation programme” intended to foster self-reliance.
Complementing this, the state has launched a broader framework focused on sustainable job creation and addressing digital exclusion. Commissioner for Youth Development Barr. Odum Ijom Ukam noted a mismatch between current skills and market requirements, calling for partnerships with the private sector and civil society to support these efforts.
