Cryptocurrency market valuation and activity trends

Overview

The cryptocurrency market has undergone a period of significant structural shifts. Between July 2025 and June 2026, the total market capitalization fell by $2.1 trillion, effectively halving in value. Despite this decline in valuation, on-chain economic activity remained relatively stable, declining by only 1.6%. This period saw a surge in domestic peer-to-peer transfers and stablecoin cross-border flows, with the share of stablecoins in on-chain value stored doubling to nearly 25%.

During this time, the privacy coin segment experienced a massive resurgence, with market capitalization growing by approximately 205% between April and September 2026. This growth was led by Zcash and Monero, alongside increasing institutional interest marked by the launch of a privacy crypto ETF on the NYSE Arca.

By October 2026, the total market capitalization rose to approximately $2.93 trillion, gaining roughly $372 billion over a 19-day period. However, a divergence emerged as Google Trends data showed search interest for cryptocurrencies falling to its lowest level in 2024, suggesting a potential lack of retail engagement. Meanwhile, technical indicators indicated the market was approaching an ‘altseason,’ supported by the market capitalization of assets outside the top 10 breaking out of a multi-year symmetrical triangle.
