Cryptocurrency post-quantum security developments
Overview
The cryptocurrency industry is exploring technical solutions to address the threat posed by future quantum computing to existing signature schemes. AmericanFortress proposed a post-quantum security scheme called Zero-Knowledge Proof of Seed Provenance (ZK-PoSP), which aims to allow Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Solana wallet addresses to remain unchanged by replacing traditional signatures with zero-knowledge proofs.
Following these industry-wide discussions regarding the vulnerability of elliptic-curve signatures, the Cardano community has moved into a formal review stage for specific technical proposals. This includes CIP-0197, a proposal for post-quantum zero-knowledge signatures for hierarchical deterministic wallets. Similar to the AmericanFortress proposal, CIP-0197 is designed as an intermediate solution to provide quantum-resistant protection without requiring users to migrate to new addresses.
